Women’s Day in a glass: the latest Italian wine selection

Women’s Day

Wines are often labelled as “women’s wines” or “men’s wines.” Nothing could be further from the truth: this distinction doesn’t exist. Wine is valuable as a drink that we enjoy, that makes us feel good, and that we want to share with those we love.
This list is my selection of wines that I would gladly open during the upcoming Women’s Day celebrations.
Whether you open a bottle alone, with family, friends, or colleagues, celebrating with a glass of wine is always a great idea!

The latest Italian selection

Benanti “Etna Doc Rosato” 2024 (Region: Sicily)

Benanti’s Etna Doc Rosato, made from Nerello Mascalese, an indigenous variety from Mount Etna, enchants the eye with its refined antique pink colour. The nose is intense, delicate, and floral, with hints of broom and fruity notes of blackberries and cherries. On the palate, it is a dry, fresh, savoury, mineral, slightly tannic, and characterised by the aromatic persistence of red fruits. It pairs elegantly with delicate cold cuts, fresh cheeses, vegetables, white meats, fish, and shellfish.
Recommended serving temperature: 10-12°C.

Gradis’ciutta “Ribolla Gialla Doc Collio” (Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia)

Made from 100% Ribolla Gialla grapes, perhaps the oldest variety in Collio, Ribolla Gialla DOC Collio is a wine with a beautiful pale straw yellow colour and a fresh and immediate nose. The palate reveals typical varietal aromas of citrus and green apple, with hints of tea leaves and wisteria in the background.

The entry on the palate is terrific, with a linear and juicy progression. The finish brings back the strong and mineral notes of lemon. A wine with intense flavours, typical of the hillside vineyards on marl and sandstone soils, and excellent sun exposure. It can be enjoyed with grilled or stewed fish dishes, creamy soups like asparagus and mushrooms, and light white meats.
Serve chilled, at 8-10°C, to capture all its fragrance.

These two varieties are perfectly suited to the Librandi estates, contributing to the production of fresh, savoury, yet deep and persistent wine. Very complex on the nose, with delicate fruity hints of melon, banana, yellow peach, and pineapple, along with vegetal and citrus notes. It pairs wonderfully with seafood appetisers, delicate fish-based first courses, and baked fish dishes.

Saffirio “Barbera d’Alba Superiore 2022”

Made from 100% Barbera grapes grown in Roddino, Saffirio’s Barbera D’Alba Superiore DOC reflects the extraordinary richness of the Langhe terroir. The vineyard’s roots are in a complex soil, characterised by alternating clay layers and precious Sant’Agata Fossil Marls (18-20%), providing structure and elegance to the wine. The hand-harvested grapes are entirely de-stemmed and gently pressed, followed by alcoholic fermentation for about nine days at controlled temperature. The wine is aged in oak barrels and concrete tanks, ensuring a perfect balance between freshness and complexity. Its structure and the typical organoleptic characteristics of Barbera make it ideal for pairing with hearty first courses, fresh stuffed pasta, and white meats.
Recommended serving temperature: 16-18°C.

It stands out for its brilliant straw yellow colour and complex aromatic bouquet, ranging from citrus to sweet spices, with mineral and marine notes that add depth and complexity. It is crisp and vertical on the palate, with a lively acidity that harmonises beautifully with its elegant and creamy structure. The long, savory finish leaves a lasting and satisfying impression. Ideal for refined lunches and dinners: it pairs with appetisers and first courses based on vegetables and fish and is excellent with oysters and raw seafood.
