The Barbera d’Asti and Monferrato Wine Consortium concluded 2024 with outstanding results. It solidifies the position of its 14 denominations in both domestic and international markets through targeted strategies and innovative projects.
Among the most significant achievements is the performance of Barbera d’Asti DOCG Superiore. Production increased by over 200,000 bottles compared to the previous year. This highlights the denomination’s versatility. It appeals to a diverse audience, from those who enjoy accessible and convivial wines to those seeking a more intense, structured experience.
“We have worked to make Barbera d’Asti and the wines of Monferrato increasingly accessible and beloved, focusing on quality, authenticity, and effective communication,” stated Vitaliano Maccario, President of the Consortium. “ In 2025, we will continue on this path, with particular attention to events and collaborations that make Barbera d’Asti a more ‘pop’ wine, appealing to consumers worldwide. We are putting great effort into the second edition of the Barbera D’Asti Wine Festival, aimed at promoting Monferrato denominations locally and bringing them closer to consumers while highlighting our producers who work tirelessly every day to promote this wine and Monferrato worldwide.”
Strong growth across Monferrato’s key denominations
The region’s primary denominations drive this enthusiasm, with notable achievements like Monferrato DOC Nebbiolo, which grew by 11% to surpass 500,000 bottles. This data confirms Monferrato’s ability to enhance the value of this grape variety, making it increasingly competitive not only within Piedmont but beyond.
In broader denominations, Piemonte DOC saw a 3% increase, nearing an additional million bottles compared to the previous year. Specifically, Piemonte DOC Barbera maintains a strong position with over 16 million bottles (+0.4%), while Piemonte DOC Barbera Passito saw an impressive +19.36%, surpassing 1.1 million bottles. Also noteworthy is the success of the dual-varietal Piemonte DOC Barbera-Nebbiolo, a true innovation in production regulations, which saw an exceptional +359% increase, exceeding 500,000 bottles.
On the white wine front, Piemonte DOC Chardonnay reached a record high with a 7.6% increase, producing 2,174,000 bottles, confirming its growing appeal among consumers. Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG maintains stability above a million bottles (+1.6%), while Terre Alfieri DOCG, though still with limited numbers, grew by 8%, a promising sign for the future.
These results reflect the success of initiatives undertaken in 2024, such as the inaugural Barbera D’Asti Wine Festival, which celebrated the essence of Barbera with an innovative and engaging format. International events like the Barbera d’Asti Fish Festival in Oslo and Monferrato Identity in the Netherlands and Belgium strengthened the Consortium’s presence in foreign markets, while further consolidating its foothold in the United States and Canada boosted exports.
