A fresh perspective on Italian wine, featuring blind tastings and a focus on native grape varieties.
Decanto, the online wine publication based in Salerno, proudly announces the launch of Untold – What Hasn’t Yet Been Said About Wine, the inaugural edition of its guide to Italian wines. Published by Squidbay, the project stands out for its emphasis on regional DOC and DOCG wine excellence and its commitment to promoting wine tourism.
The guide is available in both print and digital formats, featuring a 392-page hardcover volume titled Untold – What Hasn’t Yet Been Said About Wine and the free app Untold – Italian Wine Guide, accessible on Apple and Google stores.
Untold: A New Perspective on Wine Tasting
With Untold, we aimed to create something innovative, breaking away from traditional, self-referential narratives about wine. Our goal was to cater to a consumer base that increasingly values authenticity and quality at a fair price.
Our vision took shape through an innovative format where a cross-disciplinary panel of experts evaluated wines blind, grouped by type, region, grape variety, and vintage. This approach allowed excellence to emerge through direct comparison.”
— Luigi D’Acunto, General Manager of DecantoUntold redefines traditional wine evaluation by placing native grape varieties and terroir at the heart of the narrative. Blind tastings grouped wines by grape, terroir, and vintage, aiming to showcase the most authentic expressions of each region.
A team of over 30 experts from across Italy—including sommeliers, oenologists, and journalists—was guided by prominent figures such as Marco Sciarrini, who wrote the foreword, and commission leaders Carol Agostini, Giulia Ferrero, Patrizia Vigolo, and Roberto Garofalo. The wine experts awarded the best wines with the prestigious Tre Cavatappi (Three Corkscrews).
The project’s origins and accolades
The idea for Untold was conceived during the Covid-19 pandemic when home delivery was the only way to enjoy wine. After four years of research and development, the guide was finalized in 2024.
Untold debuted at the Paestum Wine Fest and was officially launched at the In Vino Civitas Wine Exhibition on October 12, 2024, where it received the Pagine di Vite award for its outstanding contribution to wine communication, presented by patron Silvia Imparato.
